School Closings Information

Information regarding school closings or schedule changes due to extreme weather or an emergency situation will be posted on the front page of the district website, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter as soon as a decision is made. Typically, a decision to close school or implement a delayed start schedule is not made until 5:00 a.m. on the morning in question, although there are times that a decision can be made the evening before.

This school year, Affton School District will consider an e-Learning Day that follows our AMI Plan or the following Delayed Start schedule under appropriate circumstances so students do not miss an entire day of school. For example, there are times when roads in the early morning hours are too dangerous for schools to start at the usual time, but are anticipated to clear at a later point.

Some items to note, on a Delayed Start schedule:

  • Students may be dropped off at school prior to the listed start time: 15 minutes prior at Mesnier Primary and Affton High School; 20 minutes prior at AECC, Gotsch Intermediate, and Rogers Middle School.
  • Buses will run approximately 2 hours later than typical pick-up times.

Delayed Start Schedule

On days that the district is closed, implements an e-Learning Day, has a delayed start, or dismisses early, SchoolMessenger, the district’s broadcast telephone and text messaging system, will contact all district families to announce a closing or early dismissal. Evening events and activities are typically canceled as well unless otherwise noted on the District website or in the closing announcement. This includes Cougar Care (Before & After Care) at each school; they will not be in session any time the district is closed or dismisses early.

IMPORTANT: The successful delivery of information is dependent upon accurate contact information obtained from school records. If your household and/or emergency contact information changes, please let your school secretary or registrar know as soon as possible.

In addition, parents can find accurate information about district school closings on the following radio and television stations:

What can parents do to help their students and schools prepare?

  1. Review the information you have listed as emergency contacts and make sure that the numbers are updated.
  2. Make plans ahead of time and communicate them with your child(ren) so they understand what to expect during an early school dismissal due to inclement weather.
  3. Understand that school closings are for the safety of children throughout the district. While the condition of your neighborhood streets may be fine, other areas of the district may be experiencing harsher weather.
